Enner Valencia scored a first-half double to give Ecuador a 2-0 lead at the break against Qatar in the FIFA World Cup opener at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khol.
Valencia broke the deadlock in the 16th minute after converting their winning penalty. The 33-year-old then made it 2-0 on the half-hour mark, heading in Angelo Preciado’s cross.
Valencia, who was held to a goal in the first three minutes, is the oldest player to score in a World Cup. Ecuador is ranked 44th in the FIFA rankings while the country of Qatar is ranked 50th.
